Pardons, paroles and clemency files, 1831-1835.

The Constitution of 1819 gave the Governor of Ala. the power to grant reprieves and pardons in all criminal and penal cases, except those of treason and impeachment, and to remit fines and forfeitures. This series consists of correspondence, petitions and legal papers relating to pardons from crimes, parole from sentences and remission of fines imposed. Often the records describe the crime in some detail and the character of the accused. Crimes discussed are robbery, assault and battery, riotous behavior, counterfeiting, Negro stealing, murder and gambling. Criminals include William W. Barrett, Frederick Batts, Durden Brown, William Coe, John Elliot, Thomas Garner, James Lackey, Zemrie (Zimriah) Mitcheson, Samuel Overstreet, John Payne, Margaret Payne, Benjamin Payne, Epps O. Payne, Littleton Prince, Joseph Taylor, Soloman Thomas, Daniel Turney. Included is information on several slaves convicted of crimes, including "Dick, the property of Mrs. Duke" convicted of raping Rebeccah Thompson in Fayette Co., and a Russell Co. Indian named Poosala (alias Tommy) convicted of killing an Indian women named Fhaselahaku.
